About the book

A Story for One of the Hardest Goodbyes

Saying goodbye to a home health nurse is one of the hardest goodbyes your child may have to face.

When Nurses Say Goodbye was written to help children process that difficult transition—when someone who was part of your daily lives, whom you cared deeply for, had to go.

Inspired by the real-life bond between the author’s daughter and her caregiver, this book helps families name and honor the complicated emotions of saying goodbye.

Whether you’re a nurse gifting this to a patient, or a parent helping your child through loss and change, this story says what little hearts need to hear — and what grown-ups may struggle to say.

Meet Jessica Merás-Neitzey

—Author and Mom

I’m a writer, caregiver, and proud mom of two. This book was born out of a real moment of grief in our family. The kind that small children experience deeply, but quietly.

As a parent of a child with disabilities, I’ve walked this road and seen how special and essential home nurses become. I created
When Nurses Say Goodbye to give our kids a voice when saying goodbye and to honor the caregivers who walk alongside us.

Thank you for supporting this story. It’s for you, your littles, and the helpers who become family.

A Heartfelt Review

“I read your book — then read it again (and again). I absolutely LOVED it. I think it will resonate not only with families in the special needs community but with any family.

On one hand, parents of children with special needs will feel deeply seen and touched by how relatable it is. On the other hand, for parents who haven’t experienced that journey, this book beautifully illustrates what that struggle looks like and helps them understand it with empathy.

As a parent…I felt every emotion — the sense of loss, the ache, and then the incredible hope and wonder of a new beginning. This story gently opens the door to talk with any child about emotions and loss. It also helps parents of non-special-needs children start important conversations about inclusion — about what disabilities look like, and the special equipment some children use.

Overall, I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this book. I truly loved it. I can’t wait to follow your progress — and I especially can’t wait to buy the book and read it with my children!”
